The property is grand and unique: an old church (or monastery). The rooms feel almost like a dormitory, but are spacious and comfortable. Each room has a bathroom, as if someone put dropped a pre-fab bathroom in a dorm room. Rooms feel newly remodeled and very clean.
With the church atmosphere comes a sense of calm. We took morning walks through the wooded area and sat along the river, just listening to the water and leaves. We explored the top floor which had a chapel and some explanations for the history of the hotel. The property is massive and would make for a great retreat or conference center. There is a kids' playroom.
At the back of the property are a set of stairs (~3 flights) which lead up to the southern gate of Rothenburg. It's a 5-10 minute walk to the City Center, depending on how distracted you get along the way. Very convenient, although notably not within the city walls itself.
Breakfast was simple, but good.
For the price, we found this to be an extremely worthwhile stay.

The half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and brightly painted façades of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale. Several fantastical films have been set in this gem on the scenic Romantic Road, passing from Würzburg to Füssen via Bavaria’s most enchanting towns.
Uniquely designed gates allow access to the historic centre through walls partly covered with tiled roofs. Walking along the walls offers a different perspective of the town’s colourful flowers, step gables and towers. The town hall has the tallest tower, whose far-reaching views include the large Marktplatz, home of the Christmas market. The Christmas Museum is a year-round winter wonderland, as is the shop of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the internationally renowned German Christmas decoration producer.
On a different note, the Crime Museum houses medieval torture instruments including a ducking stool. Holy Blood and Last Supper altarpieces form the focal point of towering St James’ Church, a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
In the River Tauber valley outside the centre are lush gardens, one containing Toppler Castle, a bizarre structure resembling a house on a tower. Also in the valley is a double-arched stone bridge.

The town itself is really a great example of a medieval walled town. Getting to walk the walls, look inside the old churches, and eat/stay in local establishments adds to the experience. The topper for us was the added bonus of a festival occurring during our visit!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber has met my expectations of cute, romantic well preserved medieval town , loved the historic museum of the torture , learned lot of things there , definitely loved that we stayed for couple nights unlike most of tourists come only for a day.
We loved walking around the fortress where we took great photos and explored some of the insides too.
Walking around is easy coz everything is very near.
I can highly recommend Zur Holle Restaurant, lovely staff and food.
Highly recommend this town to every travellers and especially those who love history.
I would definitely come back again.

Beautiful town and we were very happy we included it on our tour. Walking the wall was a great experience but you really don't have to walk the whole thing. We were there in the shoulder season, March, and pretty much nothing opened, shops & museums, until 2pm when the tour busses arrived. We specifically stayed overnight because of advice to be there without "hordes" of tourists and to see the town lit up. Problem was that there isn't any exterior lighting and we had the town pretty much to ourselves all morning. When the tour busses leave it turns into a ghost town. Shops close, which are all cheap tourist shops and not interesting anyway. Also, we had an extremely difficult time finding a place for dinner. There aren't many restaurants and because of that reservations are required. Happy we saw the town but spending six hours would have been enough.

Old town is the place to be.
Old town is the place to be. Beautiful architecture, history and it really feels like you are in Pinocchio’s fairytale village. Worth visiting and you don’t need more than 2-3 nights to fully explore it. And you can walk everywhere.

We stayed three nights and spent 2-1/2 days in the old town.
We stayed three nights and spent 2-1/2 days in the old town. We’ve been here many times but there’s plenty to see and do. We recommend the Rothenberger Handworker’s house tour, an ancient house unchanged since the 1700s, St Jakob’s church, the criminal museum, the night watchman’s tour, and walking the town’s perimeter walls and towers. These help illustrate medieval life and how people lived back then, and how good we have it today!

This is a stunning walled medieval town!
This is a stunning walled medieval town! You can walk around most of the wall - stork nests can be seen if you look carefully! Every street is beautiful with gift shops and cafes. The castle gardens are great to relax in and at the bottom you are rewarded with an amazing view down to the river Tauber.

A simple, quaint hotel, great location; close proximity to the town centre. A 30 minute stroll.
It was a good atmosphere in the hotel. The staff were attentive, helpful and accommodating.
We ate dinner at the restaurant, it was good value for money. Authentic German cuisine.
Breakfast was an additional cost, we felt it was overpriced although there was a good selection of food.
We stopped here as part of our journey on the Romantic Road
We would consider staying here again if we returned to Rothenburg
Very good traditional German guesthouse right in the centre of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, about 900 metres from the railway station. It is in one of those cute, old half-timbered houses. The owner was friendly and upgraded me to a double room. The room was basic but very clean. Breakfast was also good with varieties of bread, cheese, cold cuts, yoghurt, fruit and berries. As a bonus, there was a small general store downstairs, owned by the same family, and a very good kebab place next door.
This was the perfect stay for our one night visit to Rothenburg ob der tauber for the Christmas markets.
The room was comfortable, had lift access and was exceptionally quiet.
The shower over bath was an odd design but we figured it out. The bed was quite small however manageable.
The staff were very friendly and helped us get our bags to our room in the annex building along with finding the car park.
Definitely try the on site restaurant while you are there. The dinner was delicious!
People typically travel to Rothenburg ob der Tauber because it's an amazingly preserved, old city. So it's not fair to expect super modern places to stay. This hotel was reminiscent of an old Gasthaus from the pre-AirBnb days. The check in was friendly and we witnessed them being very patient with a couple of "challenging" travelers ahead of us. The room was large enough and clean, and some modern touches, like outlets close to the bed, were appreciated. The location was perfect.
Beautiful, idyllic hotel in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Otto was a gracious host and we wish we could have stayed longer than one night. For how old the town is, this hotel was a perfect mix of the old and new. Ameneties were all modern, but had the best classic touches. The terrace provided a beautiful view of the valley and river. Parking was available just across the hotel at a reasonable price (€10). It was a few minute walk to the center of town.
This Hotel is located in the very center of Rothenburg ob der Tauber - a very charming town in Germany's 'romantische strasse'. You can easily walk to all highlights of the town from this Hotel. There is a parking behind the Hotel - where we conveniently parked our car (12 Euro p/night). Friendly and helpful receptionist. Good breakfast.
Of the six places we stayed on our trip to Germany, France, and Switzerland Christmas markets, this was our favorite. Right in the middle of everything, very cozy, and a great host. The breakfast was a pleasant surprise. The bummer was that the Christmas markets were closed, but Rothenburg ob der Tauber was everything we hoped for.
The Hotel was very cute and quaint and right by the city center. The free parking was great! They were very helpful. Our first night the drain didn't work in the bathroom; it was fixed the next day. We had housekeeping every day which was surprising because of COVID but very much appreciated. The location is the best.
The staff were so welcoming. My husband is allergic to the feather pillows and bed cover, the staff found synthetic pillows and blankets for him! I highly recommend thos hotel. Our room was beautiful and had exposed timber in it. Had the best sleep here in our 1 month long trip. The bed was super comfortable!
This was by far the best hotel we stayed at on our 10 day trip. The location was exceptional. The staff were exceptional. The room was exceptional. We had dinner in the attached restaurant and both the food and service were exceptional. Breakfast was also exceptional. Great off-street parking.
You can tell this is a different class of hotel the moment you set foot into it. The receptionist (Sascha) was radiating positive energy from the beginning. Everything is super stylish and well designed. The breakfast was by far one of the best ones I’ve ever had in a hotel. Chapeau
I had a hire car and was concerned about parking. There was a large free car park at the rear of the hotel.
Also location was perfect. I wanted to be close to the walled town but not inside the walls. Hotel Rappen is about 200m from one of the walled town gates. Couldn't be better.
Everything about Hotel Herrnschloesschen is first-class. We were received by the very friendly staff, the room was well appointed, with a view out front. The alacart breakfast menu had everything you'd need, and all prepared to order.
The room is comfortable and quiet, although not so large. The cleanness is excellent and the hotel is located a 10-minutes walk from the city center. The staff is very nice and helpful. The parking space is right in front of the hotel.
Very beautiful hotel, super close to Plonlein and lots of sites of interest.
Good parking (8 euro per night), friendly and helpful staff, and delicious breakfast.
Definitely a great place to enjoy Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Wonderful family run hotel with a great location inside the city walls. Beautiful historic location with the Marktplatz and Plonlein just a short walk away. This is a can’t miss destination for any trip to Germany
Beautiful traditional boutique hotel. Very friendly welcome. Friendly helpful staff. Great breakfast. Great location with parking. Comfortable room. Large shower room. Lovely breakfast room. Beautiful garden.
It was a really cozy place to stay during our visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The staff was really nice and the breakfast and dinner at the restaurant was incredible
We had a very good stay. Great location with free parking. Very nice and clean rooms. Great breakfast and friendly staff.
Would definitely return to this hotel.
